Mrs Stone and baby Ruby :)

Earlier this morning all of Team 5 had a meet with a special guest. Mrs Stone and her beautiful baby Ruby had joined a meet with us. She was so cute! :)

Each class got to talk to Mrs Stone and ask as many questions as we wanted. Since Mrs Stone was originally Room 4's teacher we got to spend extra time with her. It was fun to see her again and with her baby. Room 3 even sang Ruby 'twinkle twinkle little star'. I think it was a great way to start the day, I'm sure everyone was happy to she Mrs Stone again.

Fractions of a set

Today for maths we did fractions. We converted the improper fractions into mixed fractions.

Building a boat/raft

On Friday last week in Room 4 we did a challenge. We did it in groups of 4. I was with Kiarah, Lee and Jermaine.

The challenge was to build a boat or raft using tape, straws and most importantly teamwork. We worked together giving each other different roles. Kiarah gave the idea to build the boat flat with walls so the animal doesn't fall, and Jermaine helped cutting the tape, while lee help cut the straws. I had the job of putting it all together, by the time we were done the boat/raft looked like this:

Watch This Space

Earlier this afternoon, we did learn't a little bit about the science of how Earth formulated. We first wrote the things we already knew about Earth before watching the video -on the last slide- to add to the list of things we didn't know before. To be honest most of the things included in the video were things I already knew, so this was just like a reminder for me.

My silhouette art

In Room 4 we've been focusing on our art for a while. We had to choose what type of silhouettes to paint. Mine is based on an image of my favourite group, I wanted to do a different one but I like how this came out as a silhouette. For the background we could chose between shades of sunsets, red to yellow, or blue to pink. I decided to use white, pink, purple, blue and a tiny bit of black at the top. While the paint was drying I began cutting the silhouette out. The bits between the legs and the rocks made it difficult to cut out so it took awhile.

Once I had fully cut it out I glued it on. It wasn't necessary but I ended up cutting little birds out and a sign - I got the idea from their previous albums, so it wasn't just random details - then I was done.

Here is how my art turned out.

Visual ratios

Today we used M&M's to create visual ratios. At first I put the M&M's in a bar graph but in this photo I tried to make a pie chart. After making some type of graph or chart we split the colours into ratios.

This ratio of green to blue is 3:3

This ratio of orange to yellow is 2:3

This ratio of red to brown is 3:2

Delicious Division

Instead of doing more addition or subtraction today, we focused on division. Division is not my strongest point in maths so it was a tiny bit confusing at first, but I used my multiplication knowledge to help me, making it easier to finish it off.

Lunch with the Prime Minster

The Prime Minster, Jacinda Adern ate lunch with Team 5 and Room 21.

She sat down at a few of our tables and had a chat with us. I remember when the Prime Minster stood by my table, with Aye, Lee and Tsai sitting with me. The only people who gave the biggest reactions was me and Aye. Aye jump out of shock when she saw the Prime Minster stood behind her, while I started choking. It was funny.

After leaving our class she went to the other classes in Team 5, before advancing to our interview zone. How the interview went will be in my next blog! :)

Maths visual

Today during maths we were put into groups again. This time I was with Tsai, Roman and Aaron (you should check out their blogs).  Both of these tasks were similar in the way that we had to figure out patterns in the form of either numbers, symbols, or shapes. We tried different ways in the first, like if it's a circle we'd colour it orange. For the second sheet we coloured it in the corner by prime numbers, and time tables.

The Deca tree

Since we're back in level 1 today we did some maths in groups. I was in a group with Kiarah, Rae Jae and Kahurangi (you should check out their blogs). We were one of the two groups who answered correctly. We solved it together and got 8889. Along with solving this we learn't about how making mistakes helps our brain grow.

So don't be afraid to make mistake, and keep going! :)

Number Vocabulary

Today's maths slides are again like a recap, but we were learning more while recapping. Along with remembering about square and square roots, we learnt more about cubed and <,> which I now know as greater than or less then.

Maths Recap Week 3

For today's maths we simply did a recap on the things we've learn't in the past few weeks of school. We timed how long it took to finish these slides and I finished with around 7 minutes left, out of 15 minutes. Next time I aim to finish faster.

𝓜𝓾𝓵𝓽𝓲𝓹𝓵𝓮𝓼 𝓪𝓷𝓭 𝓕𝓪𝓬𝓽𝓸𝓻𝓼

Today for maths we worked on multiples and factors. During our online class we also talked about prime numbers, prime numbers are numbers that can only be times with itself and one to equal it. Last week we were mainly focusing on our 3 times tables, but this week we're focusing on 4's. Knowing my 4 times tables helped me complete the last slide quickly.

Multiplication Magic

This week we went into lock down again so we've continued doing our learning online. I found parts of these slide difficult, like multiplying 200 with 267 to help solve 267 x 250. Although parts of it were difficult I found it quite a fun challenge. This is not the only work I will post today so stick around for more.

𝕄𝕒𝕣𝕤𝕙𝕞𝕒𝕝𝕝𝕠𝕨 ℂ𝕙𝕒𝕟𝕝𝕝𝕖𝕟𝕘𝕖

During the first period of school today, we did a challenge in class, the marshmallow challenge. The marshmallow challenge is where you’re given spaghetti sticks, tape, a roll of string, and a marshmallow. With those items you have to make a tower with the marshmallow sitting at the top, the group with the tallest tower wins.

We were split into small groups, I was with Aye, Jane, and Tsai. We had 20 minutes. 2 to plan a strategy, and 18 minutes to build the tower.

We had no plan except to go with the flow. Tsai decided to cut up multiple strips of tape for us while me and Aye placed the spaghetti sticks randomly to form some sort of structure. The time was running out and we still had no idea what we were doing.

Even though we started without a plan we still worked together placing pieces of tape over each other, over lapping it. We kept placing the marshmallow on the top every now and then seeing if what we made was strong enough. Jane was the one who gave us the idea of adding more tape in specific areas to help it stay stable. In the end our teamwork and random ideas were what helped us win the challenge with our tower standing at around 60cm tall. Not only that but our way of prototyping helped us figure out.

Statistics and Probability

Statistics and Probability

Today for maths we did some slides on something we have already done. It was like a recap on statistics and probability. The maths today was quick and simple but still fun to do.

Algebra everywhere

Today for maths we did some more algebra, and we graphed it as well. After finishing the slides Mrs Stone gave us a short pop quiz. I found this interesting as I have never actually done a little pop quiz kind of thing in class.

~Term 2 Reflection~

Home experience:
This term wasn't the most normal term, in fact this whole year hasn't been very normal so far. It's been quite the weird year, but to me that's what made this term a bit more interesting than other terms. By a bit more interesting I mean to say that because of the situation the world has been in there were many changes made for us to still be able to learn during that time. One of the changes would be starting the term online, and at home. It was a new experience for not only me but probably other student as well. In my honest opinion I found doing school online quite fun, more fun then I thought it would be, mostly because we had a bit of time to sleep in before joining the google meets.

School experience:
Coming back to school was different. The desks were apart instead of it being in a cluster which we would call a table, we didn't have assembly's anymore, and we weren't allowed to hug or touch each other. At first it was difficult to not hug my friends when I saw them, but as a few days past by I became accustomed to it. Luckily the covid-19 cases came down and it was level 1. We could get close to each other again! Slowly the desks came closer together, it still isn't that cluster of desks we would consider a table but that's because we as a class choose to share two desks between two people. During this whole term we would work hard and play hard. Because our class work pretty hard during this whole term we played a few games every now and then. We mostly played Kahoot and Silent ball, but we did do more activities like hand soccer.

Overall experience:
This term was a unique, interesting, weird and fun term.

Highlights:
I can think of many different highlights, like skateboarding for kiwi sport, or coming back to school and seeing my friends and teacher, or having Joseph Parker speak a few words at our assembly. I think of the whole term as my highlight. The only thing I didn't like was the situation that we had to make the changes for. I wish we made those changes for a different and less sad situation.
