Controversial Topic : Extension T3

 

During today's extension lesson we began talking about the Tokyo Olympics and some controversial topics about it. I worked with Aye, Simon and Valessa to make this set of slides. KPMG visit

This Wednesday the extension and few extra children were invited to visit the KPMG building. We had to come early because we left the school at 9am and came back by around 2pm.

During the KPMG trip we learnt lots of things about Earth and the 4 elements - earth, water, air and fire. After talking about each of those elements we were split up into 4 different groups. I was in the fire group along with Aye, Simon, Valessa, Adriana, Finau and Yolanda (check out their blogs if you like). Every group did an experiment based on the element of their group, so we used a bit of fire for ours.

At first we found the experiment tricky because no one knew what to do, but with a few clues we figured it out. Although we did have a little mishap but no one was hurt or burnt. We were supposed to make a paper spinning wheel actually spin, but here's the catch, we weren't allowed to touch it.

The way we did it was by sticking a pencil to the table - with glue tack - and balancing the paper on the tip. Honestly that was probably the hardest bit. After it was balanced we put some lit candles underneath using the hot air to spin the paper, making the experiment a success! :)

We did a few more fun activities as well, I'd love to visit again. Thanks for making this an enjoyable trip!

Diorama design plan

 

Today's extension task was to create a plan for our space diorama. We kept the design plan simple and easy to follow. We've planned to basically make the solar system with a few facts and theories. I've been working on this with Aye and Valessa. 

Theories on our Solar System

During extension today me, Aye and Valessa continued our work about theories on our solar system. The slides aren't finished yet but this is what we've got so far. 

Barriers - Poem

Earlier this morning Miss West gave us each a sheet of paper. On the paper a was a poem called 'Barriers' by a well-known poet, Hinewirangi, and some questions beside it. Kiarah and Kalani read the poem aloud to us all. The poem was about barriers, a cultural/language barrier. 

Me and Aye also worked together for this task, where she answered the questions and I help mainly with the poster. I drew it very simply but I quite like it. This task was easy to do and fun. 

Provocation: Watch this Space

During today's extension lesson Miss West gave us all a scenario about Earth becoming uninhabitable in 12 months. We had to think about what and how we would do thing to leave the planet as soon as possible. On each slide was a question we had all answered in our own ways with the knowledge we have. The different colours represent a different person's answer. If you're looking for my answers they're in light purple with black highlights. 

On the last slide is our different project ideas. Me and Aye wanted to do theories on Mars and Earth, and possibly our own theory on what would happen to Earth if we were to leave.

The legend of the golden snail

Yesterday me and my group - Nina and Aye - completed this work sheet. 

We first had to read though the text which was 'The legend of the golden snail'. After reading though it we skim and scanned though the text looking for a few of the settings it took place in, who the characters were, and described a few traits the charters had, ticking off the boxes on the list.

We all did something to contribute and complete the task.

Interview with the Prime Minster

Being in the presence of the Prime Minster made both me and Aye mentally scream. But we managed to calm down before the interview. There were a lot of children gathered outside the fence we were in, they watching us and the Prime Minster.

Although we were a bit pressured and nervous we remained calm. I'm honestly proud of myself, and Aye. It was a privilege to meet the Prime Minster and to talk to her. I think both me and Aye couldn't be more honoured to have the opportunity to speak to the Prime Minster face-to-face.

Here's the questions we asked her along with her answers in short. Also never forget that "Your never to old for people to care what you think". Those were some words from the Prime Minster herself.

Aye: How is your family doing?

"My family is great!"

Nadia: Speaking of your family, we saw Neve on the news from Waitangi Day. How do you manage being a mum and prime minister at the same time?

"Yeah well a lot of people have daughters and sons while also working and being busy so I feel I am just going through that too."

Nadia: Why did you decide to give out free lunches?

"Well I got a lot of Emails from kids about lunches."

Aye: What is Wellington like?

"It's great but it's quite cold."

Aye: What is working in The Beehive like?

"It's really awesome and I feel privileged to be working in a office there!"

Nadia: What is your favourite thing about being a Prime Minister? Who is your role model?

(Answer for who is your Role Model?). "My mum and dad of course!"

Aye: What is your favourite song? Why?

"Tidy up Time because when I play it, Neve (her daughter) cleans up her toys!"

Nadia: Has being Prime Minister been a dream of yours since you were young?

"No."

Aye: Random question: What is an item you cannot live without and why?

"My phone, unfortunately because I can use it to connect to people I work with" 

Nadia: What is something you are most proud of?

"I'm proud knowing that I am helping others lives."

Aye: What would be some advice for someone our age who wants to become Prime Minister one day?

"You can do it. I think that's very important!"

Nadia: What has been the most challenging part of leading the country through the COVID-19 pandemic?

"Worrying about making the right or wrong decision."

Pre-Interview with the Prime Minister

In the next few minutes the Prime Minister in going to arrive at our school. She is going to eat with us today, and get interviewed by both me and Aye. We are very excited and nervous, but it's ok. I will blog later about the interview and the lunch. Stick around for more!
