Smashing Fractions

For today's maths we did fractions. We did equivalent fractions, improper fractions and mixed. The revision was a mix of the three and addition and subtraction. After doing the revision slide I moved onto level 2.5, I honestly found it quite easy but when I did the level 3 slide I struggled. But it was still fun and it made me realise what I could do.

Y8 Reflection/Recount- Camp - Day 1

Day 1

Last week, Wednesday, the year 8’s headed off to camp. On the ride to camp there was chatting and singing from the back to the front of the bus. Everyone was happy, and even more when we arrived.

We were split into our groups - Thames, Coromandel, Kauri and Kauaeranga - and given face paint, a different colour for each group. I was in Thames and our colour was yellow. After everyone in the teams had paint on their face we went to the gymnasium, it was huge.

Inside the gym each group made a team chant, played fun games and we all came together to have a dance battle and show off our chants. Often Thames would place second, but it didn’t matter because we had lots of fun.

The games were like a warm up before we did our first rotation, again we were in our teams but just the girls in one and the boys in the other. Now the groups were Thames A and Thames B or Kauri A, Kauri B.

Our first rotation was Camp search. We got given a map and a sheet of paper with clues of where to go. The activity itself was quite fun and kept us active, running around and all. But our team wasn't working together properly. I feel like if we worked together more - instead of splitting up - we possibly could have broken the record time.

Streets For Everyone - Project done 🗸

On Wednesday the whole of the Extension group/class took a walk around Anderson Ave, and the area near by. On that walk we took a look at our projects we created throughout term 1. We got to test and try each others activity's. It was a lot of fun!
This is me, Kiarah and Valessa's activity, The Kiwiana Puzzle. If you want to know more about the process we went though to create it check out some of my previous posts or check out Kiarah and Valessa's blogs.

Building a boat/raft

On Friday last week in Room 4 we did a challenge. We did it in groups of 4. I was with Kiarah, Lee and Jermaine.

The challenge was to build a boat or raft using tape, straws and most importantly teamwork. We worked together giving each other different roles. Kiarah gave the idea to build the boat flat with walls so the animal doesn't fall, and Jermaine helped cutting the tape, while lee help cut the straws. I had the job of putting it all together, by the time we were done the boat/raft looked like this:

Barriers - Poem

Earlier this morning Miss West gave us each a sheet of paper. On the paper a was a poem called 'Barriers' by a well-known poet, Hinewirangi, and some questions beside it. Kiarah and Kalani read the poem aloud to us all. The poem was about barriers, a cultural/language barrier.

Me and Aye also worked together for this task, where she answered the questions and I help mainly with the poster. I drew it very simply but I quite like it. This task was easy to do and fun.

Provocation: Watch this Space

During today's extension lesson Miss West gave us all a scenario about Earth becoming uninhabitable in 12 months. We had to think about what and how we would do thing to leave the planet as soon as possible. On each slide was a question we had all answered in our own ways with the knowledge we have. The different colours represent a different person's answer. If you're looking for my answers they're in light purple with black highlights.

On the last slide is our different project ideas. Me and Aye wanted to do theories on Mars and Earth, and possibly our own theory on what would happen to Earth if we were to leave.

Watch This Space

Earlier this afternoon, we did learn't a little bit about the science of how Earth formulated. We first wrote the things we already knew about Earth before watching the video -on the last slide- to add to the list of things we didn't know before. To be honest most of the things included in the video were things I already knew, so this was just like a reminder for me.

Immersion Assembly - Term 2

We're back to school for Term 2, and we started it with an amazing Immersion Assembly! The teachers themselves produced the plays, slides and videos they presented. Everything each Team's teachers presented revolved around the topic of space, since this term's topic is 'Watch this space'.

Team 5's teacher's put on an interesting and informative play. They based it on 'the magic school bus' and went to a few planets. Each planet they visited they told us a few facts too, like Jupiter has 79 moons or Mercury is the hottest planet. Some of the facts they told I already knew but it was a good little refresher. In fact I'm honestly quite intrigued and excited to learn about this! :)

The other team's also have interesting things to learn about I hope they enjoy it. I can't forget about the teacher's too, they all did a good job with their little performances.
